eCom readying MasterCard app for BlackBerry

Here’s a great catch by Kyle at BBCool: developer eCom is close to releasing a MasterCard application for BlackBerry. Of course, “close” is a relative term, so we might not see this until the dog days of summer hit, but it’s still good to know it’s coming. This application will allow MasterCard holders to install an application on their devices which then allows them to transfer funds between accounts. After the jump we’ll go into some of the specifics regarding this app.

The process is basically to register your card and get the application. Then, using BlackBerry’s secure push technology, payments can be made from card to card. There was no mention of purchase ability with the card, though. That might be an issue, considering it’s the main reason people use a credit card.
One advantage is that whenever the card is used, the icon indicator for the eCom application will turn blue. If you didn’t charge anything and you see blue, it’s time to check up on the transaction and, if necessary, call your credit card company to report it. That, honestly, is one of the greatest features. Mobile payments and transfers are nice, but instantaneous fraud detection is much better.
Two questions remain in my mind. First is of whether this can be used in Web forms for payment. Second is whether users can hook up both a MasterCard debit and MasterCard debit card to the account. This is significant because it would allow users to pay their credit card bills using their debit card (presumably). That would add one convenient feature to the app.
There’s no release date for this yet, and it’s clearly not going to be a public beta. We’ll try to follow this and give any updates regarding the release.
